The forty-sixth meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food will be held at 10.30 am on Thursday 5 December 2002 in Trinity House, Trinity Square, Tower Hill, London EC3. This will be an open meeting.

Members will be asked to approve ACM/MIN/45 as a correct record of the Committee’s 45th meeting

The Secretariat has produced, for the record, a summary of action taken

6. Food law enforcement

The Food Standards Agency will be providing Members with an overview of food law enforcement in the UK

7. Campylobacter Working Group

  • Chairman will provide Members with an oral progress report on the work of the Campylobacter Working Group
  • Professor Humphrey will make an oral report to Members on the visit by Campylobacter Working Group members to Norway and Denmark
  • Dr Back (FSA) will outline the Agency’s strategy for reducing Campylobacter in poultry, including the way in which the ACMSF’s advice on on-farm control is being utilised, and will give a progress report on work to date

8. Sewage sludge risk assessment progress report

The ACMSF has set up an Ad Hoc Group to assist with the peer review of the microbiological aspects of a risk assessment for the agricultural disposal of sewage sludge. Dr Wyatt, the Group’s Chairman, will provide an oral report of progress

9. Burden of foodborne disease in England and Wales (including current trends)

Dr Bob Adak (PHLS) will bring Members up-to-date and will respond to their questions

10. Multi-strain Salmonella outbreaks

The Food Standards Agency will provide Members with a progress report on a series of outbreaks of Salmonella Enteritidis which appear to be linked to eggs

12. Annual Report 2002

Members comments are invited on the first draft of the Committee's 2002 Annual Report

13. Role of the ACMSF

As a precursor to the public question and answer session, the Chairman will explain the independent advisory role performed by the Committee, and will cover such areas as openness, horizon scanning, etc

14. Public Q&A session

Members of the public present will be invited to ask questions about the Committee
